The Big Lerf Weekender 2021 – 10th-12th September

After the success of last September 2020’s Big Lerf’ and the Big Lerfin Fundraiser in Weymouth in July, we are back with a free entry nationwide event! Read on to see how you can get involved and we can make this even bigger than last year.

Three Lerfers on the final day of last year’s event.

Starting at 11am on Friday 10th September, all you need to do is go lure fishing, upload your catches to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag – #biglerfweekender to join in. Entries are encouraged from fresh and saltwater. The main aim is to see if we can beat last year’s total of 44 species caught on lure and artificial bait.

There’s a prize this time for coolest catch, Maurice Mitchinton won the July event with this red mullet, another would be a deserving winner again.

Just like last year, we want this event to be open to all, so there is no charge for entry. What is different this time is there will be prizes! These will be for the following:

Coolest/Rarest Catch
This will be voted for by the members of The Big Lerf Group on Facebook. You can join the group by clicking here. The Big Lerf team will choose up to ten catches from the entrants and the photo with the most ‘Likes’ when put to the vote will win.
The winner will sent a £50 bundle of Majorcraft lures.

Junior Angler With The Most Species
We really want to see the young Lerfers getting involved, so anyone who enters who are 17 and under are eligible for this prize. The winner will be the Junior who catches the most species – we will be sharing a ‘Junior Card’ closer to the time. The card can be printed off and all entries with this card will be counted. Uploads can be from an adult’s social media account, we just ask that you play fair and that all catches must be genuinely hooked and landed by the young angler to count.
The winner will be sent a £50 bundle of Keitech lures.

Most Species On Hard Lures
The winner will be the person who catches the most species on metal jigs, plastic hardbaits or similar.  We ask that photographs of the fish must include the lure to be accepted. Preferably try to photograph the lure in the fish’s mouth before removing. As the event is in September, we think this is prime Shore Jigging season, we hope to see lots of fish caught on metal jigs, big and small.
The winner will be sent an IMA Lure Box and Majorcraft lures worth £50.

September is deep in garfish season.

To be eligible for any prize, you must print off the Big Lerf Weekender Logo to take photos of your fish with. For those that want them, we will send out a copy of the logo with your name on. This will be arranged closer to the event. You then have to upload your catch to Facebook or Instagram by 8pm on Sunday 12th September. The event finishes at 6pm but this should give all anglers a chance to upload in time. All uploads must have the hashtag :

#biglerfweekender

Although there are prizes, this is just a big virtual get together, celebrating the fish and the lures that we use to catch them. The main aim is to jointly catch as many species as possible in salt and freshwater.

I hope we will see some zander caught too.

Myself, Richard Salter & Joe Mole will be fishing in Cornwall that weekend and, depending on Covid regulations at the time, we may organise a meet or two for those who want to join us. This is not a Cornwall only event though and we encourage anglers across the country, and further afield, to organise their own meets, wherever they may be. Upload your photos, record your own videos, write your blogs, however you want to get involved, this is your weekend as much as ours…

Do not feel bad if you can’t fish all weekend either, just get out at some point and wet a line.

I’m predicting some exciting catches from our Lerfing friends around Europe too.

For the Lerfers not in the UK & Ireland, you are also invited to join. In the interest of fairness though, you cannot win any prizes. We still hope to see a big tally of colourful and interesting species from across Europe and beyond. These will be added to our international species count.

A catch like this will definitely be up for Coolest Catch.

To keep up to date with the latest information regarding the event, please join the Big Lerf Group and tick that you are ‘Going’ on the Facebook Event – you can find that here – https://www.facebook.com/events/547995889894259

I’m sure we will see a few corkys caught over the weekend.

We are once again incredibly thankful for the support by Majorcraft, Keitech and IMA through Chesil Bait N Tackle & distributor Tacklewave UK. Please do use the opportunity to support them and to also to use your local tackle shops in the run up and during the competition.

Thank you to Mike and the team at Chesil Bait N Tackle!

Another huge thank you to Neil Sutherland of Aquazid Studio for designing our logo once again. You can find his superb designs here – http://aquazidstudio.com/
I will be persuading him to upload his Big Lerf designs in time for the day, so look out for those!
